BIBLE BASE NOTE

WHAT HAPPENS TO US WHEN WE DIE?

What About Hellfire?

Is Death the End for a Servant of God?

Many believe that something in us survives after death. This belief is common in both traditional religions and modern day. But what does the Bible actually say?

GOD’S ORIGINAL PURPOSE FOR HUMANS

When God created Adam and Eve, they were designed to live forever—on the condition of obedience.

Genesis 2:17 – “For in the day you eat from it, you will surely die.”

Sin brought death. The opposite of life is not torment, but death. However, for those who exercise faith in Jesus Christ, God provided a different outcomethe hope of everlasting life.

WHAT ABOUT ETERNAL FIRE?

Jude 7 – “Sodom and Gomorrah… are set as an example by undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.”

Does this mean Sodom and Gomorrah are still burning in hell?
No. The “eternal fire” here symbolizes complete destruction, not ongoing torture. These cities were destroyed forever and no longer exist.

Jesus said:

Matthew 10:28 – “Fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.”

THE LAKE OF FIRE – IS IT LITERAL?

Revelation 20:13-15
“The sea gave up the dead in it, and death and hell gave up the dead in them…
14 And death and hell were hurled into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 Anyone not found in the book of life was hurled into the lake of fire.”

Since death and hell are cast into this lake, it cannot be a literal fire.
The lake of fire symbolizes total destruction, not torment.

Revelation 21:4 – “And death will be no more… The former things have passed away.”

THE PARABLE OF THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS

Luke 16:19-31

This is a parable illustrating the reversal of conditions between the rich and the poor.
It should not be taken literally.
At resurrection, those in heaven will have spiritual—not physical—bodies.

IS DEATH THE END FOR GOD’S SERVANTS?

No. Jesus said:

John 11:25 – “He who exercises faith in me, even if he dies, will come to life.”
